How much does it cost to paint the engine compartment?
Not the motor itself, but the interior around it.

Matt Steele shows you how to get a unique look for your engine compartment.
I felt sad when FoMoCo announced that it would terminate production of Mercury later in 2010. Mercury cars were prominent in my family while I was growing up.
The very first Mercury that I can recall in my family was a 1959 Monterey four-door sedan that was owned by an uncle. This behemoth had a Lincoln V8 engine and was an oil hog; Uncle Nick had to add at least a quart of oil at every fill-up. He referred to the Monterey as an eight passenger car—four in the rear seat and four in the front. The lousy gas mileage and heavy oil consumption prompted him to trade in the car a few years later for a new Monterey with the Breezeway window (the rear window could be opened, allowing the summer air and bugs to flow through the passenger compartment.
Another uncle, who had left the Air Force in 1965, bought a Monterey that same year. In ’66 he bought a boat, which he towed with the Monterey. The following year he bought a new hardtop Monterey which he used to take on hunting trips; this one had a 427 motor. The Mercurys during this era were still distinct from Fords both in body stylings and drivetrains.
Who could forget “The Sign of the Cat” Mercury Cougar? Introduced in ’67, the Cougar was a more spiffy alternative to the Mustang. Hidden headlamps and the sequential rear turn signals helped to establish Cougar as a sexy sports car. A buddy of mine in high school bought a ’67 with a 390 four-barrel; he fell for the “little old lady who drove it only to church and the supermarket line” that the used car salesman laid on him. In fact, when my buddy drove it to my home he proudly showed me the freshly-painted engine block that the same salesman told him was the original paint. )I bit my tongue.) That was a lot of car for a high school sophomore. He kept the car only until the summer he graduated, when he decided to marry at 18. He was reduced to driving a Beetle thereafter. It was the second hottest car in the student parking lot at our high school. While the rest of us were driving Novas, Galaxies, Dusters, etc., one of our classmates was awarded with a brand new Corvette, by his father who owned the local Philips 66 service station. Who knew that selling gasoline and lube jobs would be profitable enough for such a lavish car for a 17-year-old?
