"What is the purpose of the engine timing front cover"?

I was looking at a volvo and the carfax history said that the engine/timing front cover had been replaced and it also said that the blower resistor was replaced.
if its a timing chain then it keeps oil from being flung out and also helps keep rocks/dirt.etc... from getting in and messing up the chain or belt
